The film's title is a reference both to a nickname for the city of Los Angeles and to the idiom for being out of touch with reality. La La Land had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2016, and was released in the United States on December 9, 2016, by Summit Entertainment. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and has grossed $64 million worldwide. It was chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the top ten films of 2016, and won the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Picture. The film has also been nominated for numerous awards, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Gosling, Best Actress for Stone, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
